OUR HISTORY

NAREB is the oldest minority real estate trade organization in the United States. Founded in 1947 during a time when the established real estate industry was closed to people of color, members of NAREB were prohibited from operating as realtors. Twelve pioneers, one woman and eleven men hailing from 7 seven states across the country, chartered the National Real Estate Brokers whose practitioners are called Realtists.

  • A mere year after the establishment of NAREB in 1947, SFBOR was chartered. SFBOR has been a major contributor to minority homeownership since its formation until today. Some of SFBOR’s most notable achievements include:

  • A 1994 collaboration with the Metro Miami Action Plan “MMAP” to create the MMAP-HAP down payment assistance program. The MMAP-HAP program placed over 2000 moderate income home buyers into their first home.

  • Taking on a leadership role in multiple homebuyer events including a WOW (With Ownership Wealth) event held by U.S. Congressman Kendrick Meek which over 1000 residents participated and were counseled.

  • Successfully serving as the exclusive sales agent for the Miami-Dade County Vista Verde Rehabilitation and Resale program in 2004. This program consisted of the timely and successful disposition of 21 government owned properties, valued at over $1.7 million, which were sold to low to moderate income buyers. Due to SFBOR’s extensive sales force and marketing experience, the properties were all contracted with approved buyers prior to the actual rehabilitation and delivery by the seller, Miami-Dade County.

As an HUD-approved counseling agency, the SFBOR has prepared over 1,000 Miami-Dade County residents for homeownership. The agency is certified for pre-purchase, post-purchase, and foreclosure prevention counseling.
